Purpose of the role

 

Colas are responsible for the eight-year Maintenance & Response contract for National Highways Area 9. The contract covers around 2,300 miles of Strategic Road Network within Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, and Shropshire, as well as parts of Gloucestershire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire. We deliver cyclical maintenance, reactive maintenance, incident response, severe weather response and minor works in a region that has five strategically critical motorway interchange junctions, as well as being at the heart of the new HS2 network. Area 9 is a critical transport hub enabling customer journeys across the UK.

 

Colas Ltd. have an exciting opportunity for a Ganger to join the team based in Coleshill, Birmingham (B46 3HN).  In this position, you will have overall accountability in the effective and safe delivery on contract deliverables across all Highways Maintenance activities and provide strong people management in line with corporate policies to develop a high performing team. 

Main Responsibilities

 

As a Ganger, a crucial part of the role will be to supervise and be responsible for a team of 2-8 Highways Maintenance Operatives and to ensure that their duties are carried out efficiently, effectively and safely. You will also carry out all relevant duties associated to their level of training qualifications. You will be required to keep accurate records and management to ensure systems are updated as required. You will provide excellent leadership and direction to the highway’s maintenance team under your control. On a day to day, you will ensure all vehicles and equipment identified for use as part of a highways maintenance management system comply with current legislation, ensure all operatives undertake their duties with compliance to current legislation and company risk assessments and method statements and to carry out the relevant administrative duties associated with the role, i.e. submission of timesheets, maintenance check sheets, drivers log sheets etc. Additional to these duties, you will be required to undertake regular site inspections (audits) and tool box talks, observe and promote all aspects of health, safety and environment and to carry out a watchman role function by communicating back any issues that may arise within their working environment. You will have efficient management and utilisation of all business unit / company resource through planning and effective dialogue with peers / clients and maintain professional approach positively reflecting the image of the company. Be responsible for site safety by ensuring compliance to method statements and risk assessments and for the safety and welfare of all staff and operatives. You will promote and enhance safety awareness in the business, encouraging a zero tolerance to unsafe acts and a zero target for LTIs. To ensure that all operations carried out within your area of responsibility are undertaken with full regard for safety of visitors, other members of staff and yourself. Ensure compliance with companies safety & quality procedures. You will be required to undertake all other appropriate duties as assigned by your line manager. To assist as part of a rota system with Bronze Call out. 

 

Ensure all activities are undertaken with due regard for the environment, to prevent pollution, comply with legal and corporate requirements and minimise environmental impact. 

Ideal Candidate

 

The ideal candidate will ideally have a background within Traffic Management/road works. You do not need any management experience, what is more important is the attitude and passion towards the role and to be able to show great leadership skills. A HGV Class 2 and SMSTS is desirable, but not essential. 

 

As a Ganger, it is essential you have excellent communication skills (verbal/written) and be able to manage stakeholders at all levels, great problem solving skills as you will be involved in possible investigation works and have good time management and prioritisation of work for self and team against changing demands of network needs. We are looking for a people person who is able to work well within a team and is able to lead a team. 

A UK driving licence is essential for this role.
