Overview

Alberta Highway Services Ltd. will be providing maintenance services to Alberta Transportation on the Southwest Calgary Ring Road in Calgary, Alberta. This section of the SWCRR includes 31km of six and eight land divided freeway, 14 interchanges, 3 river crossings and a total of 49 bridge structures. Crews dedicated to maintaining these roadways will work out of our brand new facility located in Southwest Calgary. Operations, based on 24/7/365 manpower coverage, include snow and ice control, (plowing, sanding and salting) summer grass, drainage and weed control, surface repairs, bridge maintenance, overhead lighting and traffic signals, line painting and maintenance of signs, guardrails and traffic accommodation at accident sites.

Main Responsibilities

We are looking for reliable individuals who will be responsible for the day to day operations of the SWCRR.  As a highway maintenance operator you will be responsible for running and maintaining the equipment used for daily company operations, as well as non equipment type work such as setting up traffic accommodations, flagging, and installing signs, guardrail and delineators. The highway maintenance operator position is comprised of operating equipment and physical labor. In doing so you will be providing essential services by ensuring the effective and efficient operations can be completed.

 

  • Participate and Apply AHSL Safety Practices to all aspects of their work including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Prepares for their work: arrives fit for duty, with adequate time ahead of shift, and ready for the work day with everything needed on hand.
  • Carries out work safely and efficiently under clear direction given by supervisor.
  • Maintains AHSL equipment and vehicles: clearing and verification of vehicles after use, carries out standard upkeep (minor repairs) in observance of AHSL's environmental guidelines and regulations,  notifies their supervisor in the event of anomalies. 

Skills

  • A high school diploma or GED an asset
  • Valid driver’s license (Class 3 or 1 with Air Brakes) with a recent 5 years abstract with reliable  transportation
  • Previous experience in heavy equipment operation is an asset:
    • Operating and maintaining Snowplows, Towplows, Loaders, Graders or Tandem Axle Gravel Trucks
  • Road maintenance construction experience is considered an asset
  • Must be able to work long shifts up to 12hrs including night shifts and is expected to be on call for Winter Activities
  • Able to work in uncertain outdoor conditions and be able to work overtime hours when required
  • Have a willingness to work physically in a team environment by assisting co-workers with other duties as needed
  • Must be able to write, read and communicate effectively in English
  • Experience with safety regulations and safe practices
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment fit and drug/alcohol testing
