No particular special driver’s license is required except for the mechanic who would be required to test-drive vehicles.  Any employee required to test-drive any CDL-required vehicle will be required to have a commercial driver’s license in the appropriate vehicle class and required endorsements.  Must have a valid driver’s license to drive mechanic’s truck.

 

Special certificates are required in order to work on air brakes or to be qualified to replace Freon in air conditioning systems.  In addition, all employees must have the necessary tools.

 

If a mechanic has CDL licensing, or if the class of vehicle requires a DOT Medical Card to operate, then a Department of Transportation physical examination is required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Repair and maintenance of various types of heavy equipment and motor vehicles:

- Maintaining fleet vehicles up to Class 8 trucks, keeping them DOT-Compliant.

- Performing annual inspections and completing all accompanying required paperwork.

- Maintaining a wide range of fleet equipment in safe working order to include asphalt pavers, dozers, backhoes, excavators, wheel loaders, rollers, skid steers as well as a variety of other earthmoving or paving equipment.

- Properly documenting repairs.

- Keeping work areas and jobsites clean during and after repairs.

- Working in a safe and productive manner.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

- Minimum of 3 – 5 years’ experience as a heavy equipment mechanic.

- Knowledge of air brake systems.

- Basic understanding of electrical and hydraulic systems.

- Basic welding and cutting skills.

- A working knowledge of Lock Out/Tag Out systems.

- Basic computer/smartphone skills to include researching using the internet, sending & receiving e-mail, and/or documenting repairs or damage electronically.

- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

- Ability to lift 50+ pounds.

- Must be able to work in multiple physical positions to make repairs.

- Must be able to work in various climate conditions.

- Must have a current, valid Class C license and a clean driving history.

- Must currently possess or be able to obtain a DOT Medical Card.

- Must be available to work all schedules, including overtime, days, nights and weekends when needed.

- Must be willing to work out of town when needed.

- Will be responsible for the daily inspection of mechanic’s truck and perform general maintenance and repair of that vehicle.

- Must possess and provide his/her own tools including, but not limited to:

Socket sets up to ¾ drive

Wrenches up to 2-1/2 inches

Electronic testing tools

Power tools such as grinders or drills

Pneumatic tools

Welding tools

Steel-toe boots (All other safety items and PPE will be provided)

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Special certificates are required in order to work on air brakes or to be qualified to replace Freon in air conditioning systems. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to climb into, onto, and around vehicles with the ability to twist, squat, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, lift, finger and grasp, often in a prone or awkward position.

 

Must be able to perform medium-to-heavy work, lifting heavy vehicle parts (with the help of a crane) of 60 pounds or more, and must be able to move 50+ pounds without the aid of a crane.  Must be able to work while lying on a creeper underneath a vehicle and must have unrestricted manual dexterity of hands and wrists, as well as lower and upper arms.

 

Vision must be 20/40, either naturally or with corrective lenses.  Employee must not be color-blind as he must be able to differentiate colors when working on colored electrical wires.  Must have both upper and lower appendages and be able to use them to climb, crawl, and work with tools.  Hearing must be excellent or corrected by audio device.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Position requires exposure to extreme weather conditions, both inside and outside.  Must not have allergies connected to fuel, lubrication oil and grease, or fumes from the engines.
