Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Apprentice

Purpose of the role
We have an exciting opportunity for 2 highly motivated individuals to join as Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Apprentices for the Cheshire West and Chester contract, based at our Guilden Sutton depot, CH2 4EX and our Winsford depot. You’ll be learning as part of a team to carry out highway’s maintenance duties as well as winter maintenance, and emergency response when required. Activities will vary across Patching, Traffic Management to carrying out maintenance activities such as Gully Emptying, Soft Estate, Street Furniture Repair, Winter Maintenance etc.
Whilst working you will complete a 24 month Apprenticeship as Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice and will complete block training at Collage, completing a Level 2 in Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative.
Main Responsibilities
As a Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Apprentice your duties will include but not be limited to the following:
- Plan and undertake work practice productively when carrying out repairs to potholes, pavements and kerbs, and laying new surfaces on rural and urban roads
- Read, interpret and work to drawings, specifications and highways information Highways information will include details on the use of safety barriers, cones, traffic flow and safety zones to work within, whilst employed on the highway
- Use underground cable locators to identify buried water, gas, sewer lines or other utility services, and once identified excavate by hand around the line to stop any damage and disruption to services
- Apply safe working practise for moving, storing, lifting and handling of resources
- Prepare and operate powered tools or pedestrian plant, machinery or equipment for use on roads. This will include machinery for generator™s, pumps, pedestrian operated plant (e.g. pushed roller), mixers, compressors and self“powered tools (pneumatic drill)
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience within this/ or similar field, this is desirable, not essential. We are looking for candidates who are good team players and have excellent communication skills. You will have the passion and drive to learn on the role.
