Bitumen Terminal Operative(Galway)
The Colas Group operates internationally in all aspects of transport infrastructure. As part of the global organisation, Colas Ireland is primarily involved the distribution of bitumen products, emulsion and emulsifier manufacturing, and the provision of specialist road maintenance services on the national, regional and local road network. In Ireland Colas operates from 14 locations across the island of Ireland.
We are seeking a reliable and safety-conscious Bitumen Terminal Operative to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the efficient operation, safe handling, storage, and distribution of bitumen products at our terminal facility based at the docks in Galway.
Main Responsibilities
- Monitor and operate terminal equipment, including pumps, valves, and heating systems, to ensure the correct handling of bitumen.
- Safely load and unload bitumen deliveries to / from road tankers.
- Carry out routine inspections and basic maintenance of terminal equipment and infrastructure to prevent faults and ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards.
- Assist with the discharge of bitumen from vessels at the docks, following approved procedures and health and safety regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of stock levels, deliveries, and despatches using terminal management systems.
- Ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental policies, reporting any incidents or irregularities promptly.
- Assist with general cleaning and housekeeping duties throughout the terminal to maintain a safe and organised workplace.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and other departments to optimise terminal operations.
- Take part in relevant training sessions and safety drills as required.
Skills/Competencies
- Previous experience working in a bitumen terminal, chemical handling, maritime operations, or a similar industrial environment is desirable, but training will be provided.
- Good understanding of health and safety regulations relating to hazardous materials
- Flexibility to work shifts, including occasional early mornings, late evenings / weekends, as required, particularly when vessels are arriving.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic IT skills for record-keeping and reporting.
- Relevant certificates or licences (such as Safe Pass, Forklift, hazardous goods handling, or dockside safety etc.) would be advantageous.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to carry out physical tasks, including lifting, climbing, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to work at heights for tank inspection.
