Purpose of the role

 

At Colas Ltd. We are looking for an experienced and driven Highways Supervisor to join our Highways Services team in Portsmouth, PO6 1TA. In this role, you will lead and coordinate a team of operatives delivering reactive and planned maintenance across the city’s carriageway and footway network. You will play a vital part in ensuring that all works are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards of quality and compliance. 

Main Responsibilities

 

As a Highways Supervisor, you will supervise and coordinate highway maintenance teams carrying out a variety of tasks, including resurfacing, drainage, gully cleansing, paving, and signage installation. You’ll be responsible for ensuring all works are delivered safely, on time, and to the highest standards of quality and compliance. Your day-to-day duties will include managing operatives, maintaining accurate timesheets and training records, ordering materials, and overseeing site logistics using internal systems. You’ll carry out safety audits, ensure all required permits and risk assessments are in place, and monitor the performance and welfare of your team. Working closely with the Project Manager and other stakeholders, you’ll help plan resources, liaise with subcontractors, and contribute to continuous improvement across operations, always promoting a culture of safety and accountability. 

Ideal Candidate

 

The ideal candidate we are looking for an experienced Highway Maintenance Supervisor with NRSWA and CSCS Supervisor accreditations and a solid background in managing highways or civil engineering works. You’ll be confident leading teams, coordinating daily operations, and maintaining high standards of safety and quality. Strong communication, basic IT skills, and a full UK driving licence are essential. You’ll be a proactive, adaptable leader who can make quick decisions under pressure, motivate your team, and ensure work is delivered efficiently and to specification.
