Purpose of Role
To prepare the machine, assess the work requirement and implement a grinding operation to ensure the plan is achieved to meet the required specification whilst maintaining all health, safety and environmental safeguards.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and monitor all staff during the operation of the machine, except staff engaged in driving duties
- Operate as the single point of contact for all machine operational issues and train running matters, liaising with the Route Conductor, OTM Driver, Machine Operators and Control as appropriate to ensure grinding work is carried out to the requirements of Network Rail and / or Possession staff
- Ensure the safe working of the machine and all staff for the train-borne grinding operation.
- Implement decisions relating to grinding patterns, stones, pressure, and speed.
- Ensure grinding is carried out safely in accordance with all current instructions (method statements etc.) and the NR Specification.
- Ensure the product is delivered to the railway’s stated tolerances and that all Quality Assurance documentation relating to grind quality is provided at the end of each shift to the customer and to the assistant Fleet Manager.
- Assist with the maintenance of staff morale, training, and assessment requirements, undertaking assessments if competent to do so
- Operate as the Machine Driver, if required and assessed as competent to do so.
- Support the Fleet Manager as required.
- Effective utilisation of Machine Operators and Machine Support staff to support machine performance requirements
- Assist in maintaining quality systems, machine safety packs and stabling database by continually monitoring, reviewing, and making recommendations for updating as required
- Ensure the Daily Report is accurately completed, and all paperwork is submitted in the required timescales.
- Operate appropriate system for purchases and other expenses in the field, in line with Colas Rail financial controls
- Mentor and develop staff as requires
SHEQ RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain the health, safety, welfare, and security of all Rail Grinding staff on the operational grind shift, customers, contractors, and others who may be affected by their activities.
- Implement all quality, health, safety, and environmental policies
- Work to applicable Safety Plans, Method Statements, and work instructions.
- Ensure that all Rail Grinding staff and visitors are fit for duty and briefed in accordance with the "Booking-on" procedure.
- Comply with Section 7 of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
Person Specification
- Applies the safety instructions.
- Prepares the construction site : takes part in the evaluation of the means to be implemented, the breakdown of the tasks within the team, the acceptance and verification of the procurements necessary for carrying out the project.
- Organizes the establishment of his /her work perimeter and the installation of the construction site facilities and systems.
- Coordinates and oversees the work of the team : Carries out technical verifications during the work, provides technical assistance to the teams in the carrying out of the work and takes part if necessary, monitors during projects the progress of the work with respect to the construction drawing.
