Rail Grinder Fitter / Operator
Purpose of the Role
The purpose of the role is based on the rail grinders as a Fitter Operator which entails operating and maintaining the grinding machines that restore the surface of railway tracks. This role ensures the tracks are properly shaped, which enhances ride quality, extends track lifespan, and maintains safety. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively within a skilled team, utilizing their expertise to conduct inspections, carry out maintenance, keep accurate records, whilst adhering to safety regulations to support efficient rail operations across the UK.

- The successful candidate will be UK mobile, energetic, driven, determined and professional.
- They should be adept at following processes and procedures safely without requiring direct supervision.
- Have a positive, attitude and thrive in a busy and pressurised environment.
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Can analyse problems thoroughly and make timely decisions.
- Are motivated to learn and develop and maximise personal contribution to the business.
- Ideally have previous experience within the Rail Industry as an engineer or operator
- COSS (or willing to complete training)
- Ideally hold PTS certification
Essential:
- Flexible, honest & punctual – Able to work weekends, bank holidays and a mixture of days and nights as part of a 24/7 shift-based roster. Willingness to stay away from home (at company expense) when required.
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Windows
- Have a Full UK Driving Licence
- Hold a level 3 qualification in a relevant engineering or mechanical background
Key Responsibilities
- Operating or maintaining the machine safely and effectively, as instructed by the Grinding or Maintenance Supervisor.
- 2nd man / fire watch duties on grinding operation
- Reporting any machine defects to Grinding or Maintenance Supervisor, where appropriate.
- Collating the data output from the machine where applicable.
- To work safely and effectively to Colas Rail Services Operations procedures.
- Assist as required
- Assist in maintaining quality systems, machine safety packs and stabling database by continually monitoring, reviewing and making recommendations for updating as required
- Undertake any other duties if assessed as competent to do so
- Carry out COSS duties as and when required
- Daily maintenance duties to include Chipping and Blowing
- Able to complete daily Work Return Forms
