Trainee Train Planner

Purpose of the Role
Train planning in the UK involves scheduling train services, including determining their frequency, timing, and routing. Key responsibilities include:
- Timetable Creation: Develop schedules that maximise rail infrastructure use while ensuring punctuality and reliability.
- Capacity Management: Assess track capacity to ensure services do not exceed limits.
- Integration: Coordinate with drivers, maintenance teams, Network Rail, other Train Operating Companies, and key industry leaders.
- Safety Regulations: Ensure all services comply with safety standards and regulations.
- Maintenance Scheduling: Plan regular maintenance of tracks and rolling stock to minimise disruptions.
Person Specification
- Good analytical skills
- Ability to quickly learn sophisticated train planning software
- Flair for negotiation and persuasion
- Ability to engage with customers and build collaborative relationships with stakeholders
- Experience in delivering to agreed timelines and standards
Key Responsibilities
- Build train timetables and constantly assess timetable data to determine the services you can offer.
- Consider and balance several important factors, including rigorous rules and guidelines to ensure trains are scheduled safely and efficiently.
- Account for critical maintenance and improvement work.
- Develop innovative solutions to the challenges of complex capacity analysis and optimisation, contributing to improved ways of working.
- Communicate directly with customers, explaining and negotiating the best possible schedules for them.
