What does an Estimator do?

As an industry leader, The Miller Group takes pride in our service-oriented construction operations and we strive for excellence in all areas. The primary responsibility of this position is to support in the areas of estimating and job costing for business units in Atlantic Canada.

As an Estimator, You Will:

  • Develop a strategic and competitive plan for each tender
  • Lead in the preparation of thorough, accurate and timely estimates, including the preparation and submission of bid documents and the development of clear written proposals and correspondence
  • Participate in and understanding of both design/build and build to spec contracts
  • Provide accurate and timely interpretation of project drawings, specifications, supplier and subcontractor quotes, proposals, and other documentation
  • Responsible for accurate take-off of quantities from project drawings and specifications
  • Prepare of a detailed estimate from first principals using cost history and experience using existing estimating software systems in accordance with estimating policy, procedures and good practice
  • Establish and maintain relationships with existing and new suppliers, and subcontractors
  • Negotiate major purchase and subcontract agreements, prepare and review purchase orders and subcontract documents with project managers
  • Examine the scope of work for bidding and perform field investigations
  • Assist with overall project performance including costs, schedule, and quality
  • Maintain and promote excellent relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and the public
  • Manage change order processes, including pricing, negotiating, processing, and assessing cost and schedule impact

What You'll Bring

  • Civil Engineering degree or Civil Engineering Technologist diploma with designation  
  • Knowledge and experience in municipal and highway DTI project in asphalt and civil infrastructure, an asset
  • Excellent computer knowledge and utilization of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and bidding/estimating software. Experience with Heavy Bids, an asset 
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in civil estimating
  • Sense of urgency and strong commitment to achieving goals and objectives
  • Attention to details and superior organization skills to work well with shifting priorities and rapid change
  • Ability to work with a highly functional team
  • Effective communication (oral and written)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Flexibility and willingness to work occasional weekends and evenings, as necessary
