Colas Solutions focuses on technical assistance, troubleshooting, and adapting products for the Colas US companies for asphalt mixes, preservation products (spray applied, mixes, and emulsions), binders & soils.

Job Summary

The Solutions Laboratory Director will oversee the day-to-day testing operations in the Solutions Laboratory. Ensuring the delivery, accuracy, and timely laboratory services that meet the needs of the Colas Inc. subsidiaries it serves. This person will coordinate operations in all supervised areas to provide quick turnaround time and operational effectiveness across all lab departments.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees the overall safety and operational requirements for the Colas Solutions Lab.
  • Manage the day-to-day and long-term laboratory activities. 
  • Maintain the laboratory’s Quality Management Systems.
  • Manage resources within the budget and schedule while delivering projects within the agreed-upon time constraints. 
  • Keep current on all safety regulations and training and follow safe work practices while maintaining proper housekeeping to meet Colas 6S certification requirements.
  • Design and conduct technical support and research projects complying with the companies’ needs.
  • Manage the laboratory program, assigning work and defining deadlines to meet Colas companies’ requests and schedules.
  • Coordinate testing procedures with Colas companies and QC laboratories.
  • Ensure project follow-up with the companies, the laboratory supervisors, and the personnel in charge of the project.
  • Create, collaborate, and write research technical papers for submission to technical journals/organizations to advance the findings of research work in line with Colas’ strategies to promote innovative sustainable products and/or processes.
  • Prepare and/or review reports and/or presentations on research projects and testing procedures.
  • Provide work direction and review personnel’s test results and reports.
  • Oversee sample management procedure. 
  • Ensure that ASTM & AASHTO test standards are current.
  • Ensure that equipment is in good function and that calibrations, verifications, and maintenance are on schedule.
  • Perform pavement design evaluation using different material options to assess impact on project costs, LCCA and carbon footprint based on the subgrade, traffic, and climatic conditions and ability to communicate different scenarios and outcomes to the customer.  
  • Any other duties as required by Colas.
  • Ensure personnel proficiency in ASTM and AASHTO testing methods and that personnel maintain certifications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of asphalt technology including binder and emulsion modification, mix design methods, manufacturing, and construction related to asphalt pavements, pavement preservation, and durability performance. 
  • Knowledge of concrete technology including Portland cement, supplementary types of cement, admixtures, mix designs, manufacturing, and construction related to wet and hardened characteristics, durability performance, flat-work, form-work, etc.  
  • Knowledge of ASTM / AASHTO Soils, Aggregates, Concrete, Asphalt Binders, and Mixes tests methods and practices.
  • Knowledge in AASHTO Pavement Design Guide 2002 and Pavement ME Design Guide.     
  • Knowledge in the principles of QC/QA specifications and statistical control and analysis.
  • Quality orientation and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret complex sets of data through analytical processes and to present results clearly and concisely. 
  • Ability to set up a test program with defined goals that meet the customer’s technical, time, and budget constraints.
  • Ability to manage productivity where laboratory personnel interacts efficiently to achieve the set goals and deadlines. 
  • Ability to travel 30% of the time.
