Program Overview:

Simon’s internship program is designed to provide first-hand exposure to industry operations, as well as 1:1 mentorship and networking opportunities to students in order to supplement college educational programs in the area of heavy equipment operator.  Students in the program have the opportunity to work in operational areas, contribute to company goals through completion of focused project work, and apply concepts learned in the classroom to business operations.


Summary: All candidates will be required to assist with other tasks related to construction and engage in multiple forms of physical labor.  May assist in the tasks and labor associated with utility construction and installation of utility pipe, including lay out, assembly, installs, and backfills utility and drainage pipe lines and components. May assist in the tasks and labor associated with asphalt paving operations.  Operates a variety of heavy equipment, vehicles, and tooling utilized in construction and/or plant production activities on an intermittent basis.  Candidates should enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather and be open to working in a fast-paced environment.  


  • As part of the internship program, the equipment operator intern will gain exposure to multiple areas of construction operations, including, but not limited to:
  • Support the Simon safety culture and other Company strategic initiatives
  • Safely operate vehicles, tools and equipment, including, but not limited to on-road vehicles, jack-hammers, air compressors, skid plate tampers, shovels, rakes, brooms, concrete finishing tools, and other hand tools
  • Assist with installation of underground water, sewer, and similar utilities components
  • Direct movement of traffic through site, using, signs, hands and flag signals
  • Assisting with ensuring the highest standards are achieved and maintained in terms of safety, environmental performance, quality, and efficiency; including compliance with MSHA, OSHA and EPA regulations
  • Observe safety procedures, report potentially unsafe conditions, and use equipment and materials properly
  • Operate heavy equipment, including, but not limited to,  loaders, backhoes, skid steers, excavators, and other mobile equipment used in completion of construction projects and/or in support of production operations on an intermittent basis
  • Operate other tools and equipment as required for assigned tasks
  • Perform minor equipment maintenance tasks, including but not limited to greasing and checking oil and fluids
  • Drive company vehicles to worksites and company locations when authorized
  • Assist with other tasks related to construction and engage in multiple forms of physical labor necessary for completion of assigned construction projects

Qualifications, Education, Skills and Experience

  • Enrollment in a relevant degree program
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
  • Valid drivers’ license with ability to maintain a clean driving history required
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to follow proper rigging & lifting procedures for pipe and other materials

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Wears and maintains personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
  • Regularly required to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Regularly required to use hands to move and manipulate objects
  • Regularly required to communicate (talk and hear) 
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl 
  • Standing/working on feet for long periods, and walking across uneven terrain
  • Regularly required to work from a seated position operating equipment for long periods
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise 
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration
  • Regularly exposed to all outdoor weather conditions, dust, and airborne particles
  • Regularly exposed to fuel, oil, and other chemicals
  • Occasionally exposed to working from high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock
  • Required to work varying hours, including nights/weekends, and overnight travel may be required
