Summary:

The paving superintendent will ensure the successful completion of asphalt paving and surface treatment projects by supervising the work of the crews in a way that meets company standards and the customer’s expectations regarding safety, production and quality. 


The ideal candidate will have strong leadership qualities, enjoy motivating crews, encouraging teams to work together to get the job done on time, and maintain a positive attitude at all times. As a successful Paving Superintendent, you will have previous experience in construction and the asphalt industry and have an understanding of the permits and regulations for all projects.

Responsibilities:

•    Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors and consultants to adopt safe practices as part of Simon’s safety culture; review safe work plans/HASP with crew prior to job commencement
•    Ensure underground utility locates are completed and valid, and sites are safe for employees prior to performing work 
•    Work with project managers, and oversee organization and coordination crews, subcontractors, resources, and equipment, to ensure projects remain on time and on budget
•    Allocate resources to achieve project safety, schedule, cost, scope and quality objectives
•    Provide direction to foreman responsible for coordinating daily activities of assigned crew and equipment pertaining to scope of work, including holding individuals accountable
•    Read and interpret project plans and specifications
•    Review and adhere to construction schedules, ensuring milestones and completion dates are met
•    Engage in open communication with Project Managers, Operations Managers and Construction Managers, and report any issues which could affect project plan, schedule or budget
•    Attend internal and external pre-construction meetings and project site meetings as required
•    Oversee coordination of materials and ensure on-time delivery of materials to job sites
•    Oversee and promote employee training (including performance evaluations), mentoring, and development; assist foreman in addressing performance concerns as needed
•    Perform administrative tasks, including but not limited to e-mail correspondence, timecard entry, handling documents and electronic files, etc.
•    Ensure equipment maintenance inspections are completed to maintain equipment in safe operating condition
•    Complete and submit paperwork, reporting, and perform other administrative tasks related to project completion and/or employee supervision in a timely manner
•    Safely operate company vehicles and equipment
•    Assist with other job duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications, Education, Skills, and Experience:

•    Valid Drivers’ License and ability to maintain a clean driving history required
•    5-10 years of experience in asphalt paving, materials, methods, maintenance and operation of equipment with emphasis on asphalt and paving preferred
•    3-5 years of experience in a supervisory capacity preferred
•    Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering or related field preferred
•    Computer and/or mobile device experience, including use of MS Office, Android and iOS applications required

 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: 
•    Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)
•    Regularly required to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
•    Regularly required to use hands to feel, handle, and manipulate objects
•    Regularly required to communicate (talk and hear) 
•    Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl 
•    Standing/working on feet for long periods (8 hours or more), and walking across uneven terrain
•    Frequently work in close proximity to heavy equipment and machinery
•    Frequent exposure to typical construction site conditions, including dust and loud noise, and all-weather conditions
•    Some exposure to fuel, oil, and other chemicals
•    Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on a construction site such as oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and asphalt
•    Frequent travel, including overnight stays away from home may be required
