Job Summary
The ideal candidate will oversee maintenance and repairs of heavy equipment along with medium duty and light duty vehicles at project sites throughout Alaska minimizing downtime and ensuring equipment is properly maintained. The ability to work independently with limited supervision will be necessary. This position will report directly to the lead mechanic or Project Superintendent. This position may require travel to remote sites as needed while supporting other QAP projects.
This is a Union position and will require membership of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 302.
Mechanic Responsibilities
- Troubleshooting and repairing equipment, including Sandvik and john henry drills.
- Maintenance and servicing of equipment
- Coordination of maintenance and repairs of equipment with Shop Foreman
- Keeping repair and maintenance records in accordance with the Shop Foreman and Safety Department’s direction
- Inspecting equipment and tracking equipment repair needs; communicating recommendations on shop repairs to the Shop Foreman
- Assisting with procuring, receiving, and inventorying shop supplies and parts under the direction of the shop foreman
- Working with and training apprentice mechanics and service oilers
- Support organization and maintenance of the shop facilities including organization and compliance with Colas 6S goals along with associated facilities and support infrastructure
- Promoting safety and regulatory compliances while performing job responsibilities
- Maintenance of CDL with hazmat endorsement
- Must be able to work Saturdays and Sundays. Typical weekly work hours can meet or exceed 60 hours.

This position will report directly to the lead mechanic or Project Superintendent. This position may require travel to remote sites as needed while supporting other QAP projects.
Education
- College/University/Trade School or equal experience in relevant field preferred
- Professional certifications as appliable to show experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand/work on feet for extended periods, walk on uneven terrain, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, see, and hear with frequent exposure to loud noise. Regularly exposed to all outdoor weather conditions, dust, and airborne particles.
- Occasionally lift and move 50 pounds or greater.
- Required to pass pre-employment drug screening as well as a PAT (physical Ability Test) prior to starting work.
- Wears and maintains personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Must have own tools.
Miscellaneous
- Previous experience in road construction and/or a shop setting preferred to ensure a smooth transition into the role.
- CPR and 1st Aid Certification preferred.
- Temporary housing is available dependent on project location.
