Job Summary


The Chief Estimator will be responsible for managing a team of Construction Estimators for bidding targeted work. Responsibilities are to ensure that the Estimating team has prepared a comprehensive and responsive bid.

Main Responsibilities


  • Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers about prospective work
  • Have demonstrated leadership abilities and manage estimating team workload to prepare comprehensive bid proposals
  • Oversee and review the work of the estimating department ensuring an effective and streamlined bid process
  • Prepare and support the bid close for a timely bid submittal
  • Provide consistent training and mentorship to the estimating team
  • Research and remain up-to-date on current estimating software and follow through with training
  • Research pricing for estimates based on historical and regional costs
  • Research new bidding opportunities and newly advertised projects within our geographical territory
  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scopes of work and required contents of estimates
  • Support Senior Management on achieving yearly goals and prepare budget presentations
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, construction management, construction technology or an equivalent combination of technical training and/or related experience
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in estimating cost controls and/or engineering related experience


  • Experience leading pursuit and estimating activities for large and/or complex projects
  • Advanced knowledge of HCSS Heavy Bid/Heavy Job estimating software
  • Knowledge and experience in alternative construction delivery methods
  • Communication and interpersonal skills for clear and effective management
  • Ability to comprehend project plans and specifications
  • Ability to multitask efficiently and effectively and be flexible
  • Ability to prepare detailed, accurate estimates
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet short deadlines and process projects quickly
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Must be a self-starter and self-directed
  • Must be able to lead estimating teams
  • Must rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
  • Proven ability to maintain and develop clients
