Job Summary
The Concrete Finisher is responsible for performing a variety of tasks including placing, finishing, protecting, and repairing concrete.
Main Responsibilities
• Operate a screed or shovel to level freshly placed concrete to grade and depth specifications.
• Smooth concrete surfaces using either a hand trawler, long handled “bull float,” or powered float.
• Understanding of the requirement and positioning of tooled in control joints in concrete to help control cracking.
• Place and finish architectural concrete such as exposed, stamped, and colouring to meet job requirements.
• Signal and direct pumping from concrete mixing trucks.
• Apply the proper curing compounds and sealing compounds to cure surfaces.
• Cut joints/grooves in concrete with edging tools to help control cracking.
• Understand the basics of achieving architectural finishes of stamped and exposed concrete.
• Understand the effects that adverse weather has on concrete and the necessary ways to protect work.
• Understand the City of Calgary specifications for allowable time, slump, and air content.
• Recognize proper forming techniques to support required dimensions of concrete structures.
• Set up a laser or survey level to check and establish grades.
• Know the timing of stripping forms with fresh concrete to achieve the proper grade.
• Support and develop new team members.
• Willingly share skills, and knowledge with team members.
• Maintain a safe and clean work area.
• Maintain a positive company image.
• Other duties as required.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Certifications
• High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
• First aid experience considered an asset.
• Valid driver’s license (Class 5).
• Own transportation.
Work Experience
• 3-5 years of experience with road building, sidewalks, curbs, and gutter.
Technical Skills
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Capable of using all tools, mag floats, bull floats, or steel trowel to finish curb and gutter by hand or behind extruder.

Working Conditions
• Overtime as required.
• Ability to work a 12 hour day.
• Must have the ability to work at heights.
• Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust, grease, fumes, odors, oil, asphalt, and toxic and flammable substances.
• Required to perform tasks that involve heavy lifting, bending, crouching, and kneeling.
• Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.
• Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs on a regular basis.
• Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
• Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol policy, including testing requirements.
• Must comply with all company policies.
