Job Summary
The Estimator plays a key role in the preparation of accurate and competitive bids for public and private infrastructure projects, including gravel and asphalt placement, deep underground utility installations, and concrete flatwork. This role involves pre-construction estimating, bid submission, schedule development, and support during execution. The Estimator works closely with project managers, operations teams, clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to develop cost-effective and well-documented estimates. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growth-focused environment.
Main Responsibilities
• Identify and assess project risks and opportunities.
• Attend site visits, pre-bid meetings, and perform job site investigations.
• Analyze drawings, specifications, and related documents to prepare detailed estimates.
• Liaise with clients to understand scope, priorities, and potential value-engineering options.
• Solicit and evaluate pricing from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure competitive proposals.
• Coordinate closely with project supervisors and operations throughout the bid and execution phases.
• Prepare clear, accurate, and professional cost estimates and tender submissions.
• Lead handoff meetings with operations, including sharing approved drawings and documents.
• Support the project team during execution with pricing changes, cost tracking, and problem-solving.
• Utilize internal software and tools to track bid submissions and success rates.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Perform other duties as required in support of the estimating and project delivery process.
Qualifications
Education, Training, Diplomas and Certifications
• High-School Diploma or G.E.D required.
• Post-secondary education with a diploma or degree related to Construction Management, Quality Surveying, Estimating, Engineering or equivalent required.
• Experience with estimating software like HeavyBid or Bid2Win.
• Knowledge of local construction standards and municipal tendering processes.
• Familiarity with contract law or construction contract terms.
• Equivalent experience in civil construction may be considered in lieu of formal education.
Work Experience
• Experience in road construction or civil infrastructure is considered an asset.
• 1-3 years’ estimating experience.
Technical Skills
• Strong computer background including experience with MS Office.
• Spreadsheets, Databases, Estimating packages, Take-off packages, Scheduling packages.
• Excellent analytical and mathematical skills for accurate cost calculations.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to work with complex documents.
Soft Skills
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written).
• Effective time management and ability to prioritize tasks.
• Detail-oriented with high accuracy in cost estimates.
• Collaborative team player with a proactive attitude.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
• Ability to manage competing deadlines and work under pressure.
Working Conditions
• Willingness to travel to job sites as required.
• Availability for overtime during peak bidding periods.
• Work performed in both office and field settings.
• Office work includes extended periods of sitting, keyboard use, and screen time.
• Fieldwork may involve exposure to dust, noise, odors, weather extremes, and construction-related hazards.
• Must be physically able to stand, crouch, kneel, and walk over uneven terrain.
• Driving to sites may require long periods of vehicle operation; must adhere to traffic laws and company vehicle policies.
• Compliance with the company’s drug and alcohol policy and all applicable safety procedures is mandatory.
