Job Summary
The Screed Operator proficiently operates various types of manual and automatic paving screeds. The Screed Operator must have knowledge and experience for the proper setup, operation and maintenance of Niveltronic or Topcon grade and slope automatic systems, and be experienced in all aspects of asphalt mix applications including parking lots, residential subdivisions, collector and arterial roadways, highway work, etc.
Main Responsibilities
• Responsible for estimating overall quantity for the project as well as the quantity needed to achieve the correct grade in the finished surface.
• Ability to use automatic grade controls.
• Manually set angle and depth of screed.
• Operate valves to regulate flow of material at a specified rate.
• Communicates with asphalt paving operator on flow of paving machine.
• Observes distribution of material over road surfaces to ensure uniform distribution.
• Using depth gauge, verify depth specifications of compacted asphalt.
• Maintain the pace and continuity of the paving job.
• Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on the equipment.
• Other duties as required.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Certifications
• Must have a valid Class 5 (or better) driver’s license with clean drivers abstract.
• Own transportation.
Work Experience
• 3-5 years of experience operating a screed.
Technical Skills
• Knowledge of paving equipment and the paving processes.
• Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies.
• Excellent communication skills.

• Ability to work in a team setting.
• Ability to work extended hours and days with no interruption.

Working Conditions
• Overtime as required.
• Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust, grease, fumes, odors, oil, asphalt, and toxic and flammable substances.
• Required to perform tasks that involve heavy lifting, bending, and strenuous movements.
• Ability to perform shoveling, raking, tamping, walking, moving, and the setup of barricades.
• Use of personal protection equipment is required.
• Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear required when working outdoors.
• Must be able to work outdoors in areas that are dusty and/or dirty.
• Required to perform tasks that involve bending and strenuous movements.
• Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol policy, including testing requirements.
• Must comply with all company policies.
