Purpose of the role

 

Colas Ltd are looking for an experienced Traffic Safety and Control Officer (TSCO) to join our team based at the Guilden Sutton depot, CH2 4EX. Reporting to the TM Manager you will be delivering safe, efficient, and compliant traffic management services for the Cheshire West and Chester contract.

 

In this role, you will be responsible for the effective design, layout and management of traffic systems, ensuring all road users—including pedestrians, cyclists, and vulnerable groups—are fully considered in every scheme. You will help keep traffic flowing smoothly without compromising public safety, while providing operational support, professional oversight and accurate reporting.

Main Responsibilities

 

As a TSCO you will ensure the effective and safe use of Colas plant and fleet, completing all vehicle checks in accordance with company policy. Working closely with the Traffic Management Manager, you will support people management activities such as resource planning, recruitment, investigations, team development, health and safety reporting, and timesheet coordination. You will develop creative solutions to traffic, transport, and kerbside challenges while maintaining smooth traffic flow without compromising public safety. Monitoring the user experience of schemes, compiling accurate reports, and making informed adjustments where necessary will also form a key part of your responsibilities. You will manage administrative tasks in line with Colas processes while maintaining a professional approach that reflects the company’s values. You will be responsible for ensuring all works comply with Colas Health & Safety practices and may be required to undertake additional duties as directed by your line manager. Although the role is primarily Monday to Friday, some flexibility for occasional out-of-hours work is required. 

Ideal Candidate

 

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working in a similar role with a Traffic Management background working on local authority roads. You will need strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, excellent verbal communication skills and being proficient on MS Office is essential for this position. You must be able to perform effectively under pressure, work well within a team, and demonstrate strong attention to detail.

You will have comprehensive understanding of regulatory frameworks and key industry schemes are essential, as is the ability to resolve complex traffic and road space challenges creatively. The role requires a full UK driving licence, National Highways Sector Scheme (minimum 12D) and in-date TSCO qualification is essential. 12A–B Foreman, M6 Supervisor qualification, CSCS card, First Aid at Work, Safety Awareness training, and IOSH Health & Safety training are desirable.
