The Communications Systems Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all field execution related to communications and low-voltage infrastructure. Working closely with the project team, this role ensures work is delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with contractual, quality, and regulatory requirements. The Superintendent oversees telecommunications infrastructure, network cabling, fiber optics, radio systems, security systems, and other communications-related installations while providing strong leadership to crews, subcontractors, and field supervision.
Main Responsibilities
• Direct day-to-day field operations for communications systems construction, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, and to approved specifications.
• Coordinate and execute work in accordance with engineering drawings, approved submittals, and project requirements.
• Prepare and manage work schedules in coordination with Site Engineers/Coordinators and under the direction of the Package or Segment Manager.
• Coordinate work sequencing and site activities with adjacent segments, subsystems, and construction representatives to maintain schedule alignment.
• Interface with project managers, engineers, inspectors, vendors, subcontractors, and clients to resolve issues and maintain project alignment.
• Assist with interpretation of drawings and specifications for field crews, facilitating technical clarifications with design and engineering teams.
• Provide field-level problem solving, identify risks, and escalate issues in a timely manner.
• Maintain a consistent on-site presence to monitor progress, manage issues, and support field execution.
• Complete daily field reports and maintain accurate documentation using project control systems.
• Take all necessary steps to maintain a safe working environment and ensure the safety integrity of all activities undertaken by crews and subcontractors.
• Lead and actively participate in safety programs including inspections, onboarding, hazard assessments (JHA/FLHA/SWP), near-miss reporting, and incident investigations.
• Assist in the investigation of accidents and incidents to determine root cause and preventative measures.
• Maintain accountability for safety performance within the assigned scope of work.
• Oversee installation quality and ensure all work complies with approved drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
• Identify, report, and track non-conformances, coordinating corrective actions with Field Engineers or management as required.
• Promote environmental stewardship by integrating environmental controls into work Assist in developing and managing budgets, cost estimates, and efficiency analyses.
• Coordinate material procurement, equipment logistics, and site readiness for specialized communications system installations.
• Establish crew productivity targets and expected hours for specific tasks, managing shift durations and implementing controls to prevent overruns.
• Review and approve timesheets, ensuring alignment between hours worked and work completed.
• Lead, mentor, and coach multiple crews, foremen, and subcontractors across active work fronts or simultaneous sites.
• Foster strong, professional relationships with clients, inspectors, and internal stakeholders to support project success.
• Provide clear, timely updates on progress, risks, and changes to management and project stakeholders.
• Coordinate with field coordination teams to schedule and support survey, concrete, quality, safety, and environmental inspections.
• Provide technical and administrative support to the project team as required.
Requirements
• Post-secondary degree or diploma in engineering or a construction-related discipline, or a relevant trade designation with equivalent experience.
• Minimum 3 years of proven heavy civil construction experience, preferably on LRT or similar public infrastructure projects.
• Experience with communications systems construction, including telecom infrastructure, fiber optics, network cabling, radio, and security systems.
• Experience with earthworks, removals, concrete, and heavy equipment operations is considered an asset.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license (clean abstract preferred).
• Ability to safely navigate active construction sites, including climbing, uneven terrain, and working outdoors in all Edmonton weather conditions.
