Reporting to the Project Construction Manager, the Segment Construction Manager - LRT OMF, is responsible for the coordination, management, reporting and construction activities in their assigned segment through to completion of the project. In addition to the day-to-day management of the activities within the segment, the Segment Manager is responsible for ensuring targets are met, and Value in the Ground is achieved while adhering to MIP’s Safety, Quality and Environmental standards and industry regulations.


 

Main Responsibilities

• Take ownership of the project schedule within the segment ensuring accurate schedule updates are provided to the scheduling team, mitigations are put in place where necessary, and optimizations are investigated and incorporated.

• Drive the delivery of multidisciplinary work within the section to maximize Value In The Ground (VITG) achieved on a week by week basis in accordance with the Project Schedule, reporting any delays to the Senior Management team.

• Ensure the Construction is in full compliance with the Project Agreement, including matters relating to design, quality, safety, environment, city/regulatory boards and life cycle performance.

• Promote respect for the environment and communities by reviewing and participating in monitoring with the Environmental Monitors, implementing corrective actions if identified.

• Work with senior construction leaders to ensure the design and construction are implemented in a coordinated fashion meeting Project Requirements and the Project Vision.

• Resource the 1, 3, and 6 month lookahead, build readiness matrices for upcoming scopes and ensure all elements are in place to deliver without delay.

• Interface with adjacent Segments to agree clear boundaries, define scope, coordinate work schedules, knowledge share and provide documentation requirements (e.g. handover of any shared ITPs).

• Work with Design, Procurement, Permit and Contracts Admin teams to ensure adequate documentation, materials and resources are in place to deliver the works and de-risk possible resource spikes and delays that may impact other segments / project work scopes.

• Ensure technical and procurement expectations of the Construction Services team are well defined and proactively track their delivery to meet the needs of the Segment construction.

• Identify opportunities to deliver value earlier within the segment and bring these to realization.

• Provide safety leadership within the segment ensuring method statements are in place and followed.

• Manage the Coordinators, Superintendents, Project Managers and Subcontractors to ensure the built works comply with the Project Agreement, design and quality standards and compile and submit construction certificates for the works.

• Review and approve Change orders, RFI, design and schedule changes, and control expenditures with the segment to ensure that the project is on budget.

• Ensure that the team are correctly reporting quantities, claiming works completed and contributing necessary information for the assessment of claims by the subcontractor and to MIP’s client.

• Be regularly visibly in the field and ensure that direct reports spend a high percentage of their time at the work-fronts positively driving production.

• Maintain the team’s focus on delivery of the works removing roadblocks and celebrating continued delivery of VITG.

• Mentor team members and train them in coordinating work on site and managing productivity, cost, time and quality.

• Always cooperate / communicate with all MIP personnel, in a polite and respectful manner mentoring, motivating and encouraging everyone to be successful.

• Support project communication by compiling, analyzing and supplying appropriate information to effectively communicate construction progress to the Senior Management team and impacted stakeholders presented in weekly, bi-weekly and monthly meetings.

• General management of personnel within the assigned team including but not limited to time approvals, conflict management, hiring and termination processes, and performance management.

Requirements

• 4-year degree in a construction-related field (or equivalent construction-related work experience), as well as at least 12 years of experience in field, self-perform construction for large multidisciplinary projects.

• Must have direct experience performing in a similar role as outlined above, for a similar transportation projects in an urban environment.

• Experience working on a large integrated joint venture infrastructure project is preferred.

• Ability to negotiate the terrain of an in-process construction site, including climbing stairs and ladders, steep/ slippery terrain, walking, and working outdoors in all types of Edmonton weather and conditions

 

Skills, Competencies, Attributes

• Must be local or relocate to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for the duration of the project.

• Possess a valid class 5, or higher drivers license.

• Spend 20-40% of day in the field (physical / elemental requirements)

• Ability to negotiate the terrain of an in-process construction site, including climbing stairs and ladders, steep/ slippery terrain, walking, and working outdoors in all types of Edmonton weather and conditions
