E Construction | Intermediate Quality Control Technician
Summary
The Intermediate Quality Control Technician is responsible for the testing of road construction materials including hot mix asphalt and granular base course. This role determines whether road construction materials meet or exceed the standards and specifications prescribed by customers.
Responsibilities
Quality Control and Testing
- Collect and/or prepare aggregates and asphalt samples for analysis.
- Use a nuclear gauge or coring device to conduct density testing of road surfaces.
- Perform field and laboratory tests at various points throughout the road construction projects and report test data in a complete manner.
- Complete daily records of paving limits, placing temps, rolling temps, rolling patterns, tonnages, weather and other items that may influence product output.
- Visually inspect aggregates for clay, shales or soft rock.
- Ensure that all testing equipment is functioning properly and calibrate equipment within its calibration cycle.
- Conduct, document and file plant calibrations.
- Test loose mix to confirm plant calibrations, analyzing temperature, asphalt cement content, mix moisture content, gradation, density of lab compacted mix and volumetric properties.
- Conduct Marshall and MTD tests to determine density, air voids, VMA and VFA.
- Plan work schedule daily depending on job site requirements and work independently to complete necessary testing and reports.
- Must ensure a solid understanding of and comply with the principles of the company’s Code of Ethics.
- Must examine situations in light of the principles of the Code of Ethics.
- Other quality control related duties as required.
Safety
- Promote, execute, and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors, and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
- Work with Safety Department to investigate damage, incidents or near misses in the worksite, and ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the Company’s Safety Program.
- Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the wellbeing of others.
Teamwork
- Participate as a team member, and contribute towards the success of the organization, which may involve the provision of other technical and administrative support, as required.
- Promote a team approach and maintain dialogue with all employees to exchange information and gather ideas.
- Collaborate with any project teams on other special initiatives, as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Technical Diploma in Certified Engineering Technology considered an asset
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred
- Class 5 Drivers License preferred
Work Experience
- Minimum 2 years experience in Quality Control within the road construction industry.
- 2 to 3 years experience materials testing of aggregates and asphalt products is required

- Intermediate Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel

Working Conditions
- Required travel to various job sites in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories to ensure the high quality work that our customers are accustomed to.
- Overtime as required.
- Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
- Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 LBS on a regular basis.
- Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
- Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
