Reporting directly to the Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Coordinator plays a key role in driving a culture of safety excellence across our projects. In this position, you will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of our Health and Safety Management System, ensuring it aligns with our company’s strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.

You will work closely with Project Management teams to ensure that each project’s safety plan is not only aligned with corporate policy but also tailored to meet the specific regulatory and operational requirements of each site. Your proactive approach and expertise will help foster a safe, compliant, and productive work environment.


Must posses the ability to negotiate the terrain of an in-process construction site, including climbing stairs and ladders, steep/ slippery terrain, walking, and working outdoors in all types of Edmonton weather and conditions. Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. This position may require travel to various project sites

Main Responsibilities

Responsibilities: 

  • Advises and guides the most senior construction site representative in the establishment and management of MIP HSE processes, identifying and eliminating/controlling any hazards to persons and property.
  • Attend meetings as requested (e.g., MIP, contractor, client). Communicate pertinent information to MIP Safety Manager and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Utilize safety management software to document incidents (including proactive events), meetings, inspections, orientations, observations, and corrective actions.
  • Conduct inspections as requested.
  • Review contractor documentation associated with work activities to confirm a proper hazard assessment has been completed and required permits are in place.
  • Engage managers and supervisors in the risk assessment process for new or modified work activities.
  • Participate in the development and/or review of SWP/SJP/AHA as requested.
  • Provide safety orientations (as needed) to personnel, including MIP employees, subcontractors, vendors and visitors.
  • Oversee provision and documentation of first aid treatment and communication to appropriate personnel when applied.
  • Guide supervisors with conducting incident investigations to ensure the identification of root causes and corrective actions.  
  • Complete prequalification of potential subcontractors and review of safety plans prior to mobilization.
  • Develop and/or provide training materials to workers as requested.
  • Maintain active and visible involvement using open communication with employees and stakeholders regarding HSE issues on the project.
  • Aid as requested with internal or external audits and corrective action plans.
  • Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate or assigned by MIP Safety Manager.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field (or equivalent experience)
    CRSP and NCSO designation required
  • Five plus years of related work experience in the field of Health and Safety in a construction or light rail
  • Thorough knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, Codes and reporting procedures, as well as good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Vaid class 5 or higher driver’s license, preferably with a clean drivers abstract
  • Must be able work rotating nights, weekends during construction season
  • Must be able to work outdoors, all types of Edmonton weather and negotiate the terrain of an in-process construction worksite including steep and/or slippery terrain and climbing stairs and ladders
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
