Summary

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, modifying, and improving mechanical systems and components for Asphalt Plants, Crushing Plants, and related heavy equipment. This role focuses on delivering custom engineering solutions that enhance operational efficiency, reliability, and safety. The position works closely with welders, electricians, and millwrights in a manufacturing shop environment to ensure practical, cost-effective, and durable results.

Responsibilities

Design and Customization

  • Engineer modifications to Asphalt and Crushing Plants to meet company-specific requirements.
  • Develop mechanical designs for custom components, retrofits, and plant upgrades.
  • Create detailed CAD models, drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs) for fabrication and assembly.
  • Ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability and field installation.
  • Schedule and prioritize work orders for maintenance, repair, and inspection of equipment and vehicles.
  • Must ensure a solid understanding of, and comply with the principles of the company’s Code of Ethics.
  • Must examine situations in light of the principles of the Code of Ethics.
  • Other Mechanical Engineer duties as required.

Fabrication and Implementation

  • Collaborate with shop teams (welders, electricians, millwrights) to execute designs.
  • Oversee fabrication and installation of custom parts and assemblies.
  • Provide technical guidance during assembly and commissioning.
  • Other fabrication and implementation duties as required.

Equipment and Plant Optimization

  • Analyze existing equipment for performance improvements, reliability, and safety.
  • Design and implement solutions for conveyors, chutes, hoppers, dust control, and material flow.
  • Reinforce and modify loader and skid-steer buckets, paver components, and other heavy equipment as needed.
  • Monitor KPIs to measure equipment efficiency and performance, including: plant uptime percentage, production throughput (tons/hour),  maintenance cost per ton and downtime frequency and duration.

Project Support

  • Respond to operational requests for custom-built tools or equipment for road projects.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and develop corrective actions.
  • Support field crews during plant setup, commissioning, and repairs.
  • Lead small projects assigned by the Plant Manager and or the Equipment Manager, ensuring timely completion and adherence to quality standards.

Compliance and Documentation

  • Ensure all designs comply with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, ECNs, and technical manuals.
  • Prepare installation guides and training materials for maintenance teams.

Qualifications/Requirements

Education, Training and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.

Work Experience

  • Minimum three years’ experience as a Mechanical Engineer
  • Strong knowledge of welding, fabrication an asset.
  • Experience with industrial plants and aggregate/asphalt processing is an asset.
