Day In the Life

The Asphalt Plant Operator role involves overseeing plant operations, coordinating truck loading and customer orders, and performing routine mechanical maintenance to keep the facility running smoothly. You’ll work closely with the Plant Superintendent, help manage inventory, and contribute to overall plant performance and reliability in a fast‑paced, hands‑on environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor the asphalt plant, ensuring safe, efficient, and consistent production
  • Load and scale trucks accurately, maintaining smooth flow of materials and timely dispatch
  • Communicate with customers to take daily orders and provide excellent service
  • Perform daily plant maintenance, including lubrication, adjustments, and minor/major mechanical repairs
  • Complete all required equipment inspection and maintenance logs (daily, weekly, and monthly) with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Operate a loader to feed the plant with materials as needed
  • Work collaboratively with the Asphalt Plant Superintendent to maintain high product quality and meet production targets
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of wear parts and maintenance components to minimize downtime
  • Support other operational tasks as needed to ensure overall plant efficiency

Qualifications

  • 2 years of previous experience operating an asphalt plant, quarry plant, or similar heavy industrial equipment environment
  • High school Diploma
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform routine maintenance, lubrication, minor and major repairs on plant equipment
  • Experience operating heavy equipment, including loaders, skid steers, or similar machinery
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with customers, taking orders, and coordinating with the plant superintendent
  • Ability to read and complete inspection, maintenance, and production logs with attention to detail
  • Knowledge of asphalt production processes, material types, and quality standards (an asset)
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical or operational issues under time-sensitive conditions  
  • Basic computer or scale system skills for ticketing, order entry, and inventory management
  • Ability to work in outdoor/industrial environments and perform physical labour as required
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to operate company vehicles or equipment as needed
  • Safety-focused mindset, with knowledge of workplace safety regulations and safe equipment operation
  • Flexibility to work extended or irregular hours during the paving season when required

Compensation Data

Targeting $37-39/hr
