Position Summary
A process engineer is an engineering professional who is responsible for designing, optimizing, and supporting processing systems across the entire McAsphalt operations. This role involves providing technical leadership, performing complex engineering analyses, and contributing to the multidisciplinary project teams to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient facility operation.
A process engineer is also responsible for the technical and managerial aspects of specific engineering projects as well as providing engineering support to the company’s plants and departments.
Reports To
The Process Engineer exercises authority and supervision over all engineering and project tasks assigned. The Process Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager.
Main Duties & Responsibilites
Engineering Operations Support Functions:
• Perform process design, heat & material balances, and equipment sizing.
• Develop and update PFDs, P&IDs, hydraulic calculations and control narratives.
• Lead or support FEED, FEL, detailed engineering, debottlenecking studies, and process optimization initiatives.
• Review hazard identification (HAZID), HAZOP, and ensure compliance with applicable codes (API, ASME, CSA, ISO).
• Analyze operational data to troubleshoot process issues and recommend improvements.
• Prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, design basis memoranda, and project deliverables.
• Mentor junior engineers and support knowledge-sharing within the team.
• Provide timely plant support during peak operating season to minimize down time (e.g. troubleshooting, coordinating contractors and suppliers, arranging for replacement equipment and recommending alternate operating procedures to maintain production).
• Provide general engineering support to plant managers, maintenance and the cross functional team as required.
• Devise methods for improving performance at various plants.
• Travel to plants is required to fulfill duties regarding Capital Projects and Support.
• Continue developing applicable engineering standards design templates and tools.
Project Management Responsibilities:
• Define project scopes, Budgeting and scheduling
• Coordination of contractors and Construction Management
• Procurement Specifications and Technical Bid Evaluation
• Work with local, provincial or federal officials to acquire permits required to proceed with projects requiring formal approval
• Inspection during and after project
• Training of plant personnel and assisting updating operating procedures as it pertains to aspects of project installations.
• Project Progress Reporting
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemical engineering.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng).
• 10-15 years of relevant experience in Oil & Gas (upstream, midstream, or downstream).
• Strong understanding of codes, safety standards and regulatory requirements.
• Full Proficiency in Process Design, PFD and P&ID development.
• Full Proficiency in equipment sizing, hydraulic calculations and process control.
• Experience in Project and Construction Management.
• Knowledge of Microsoft products such as Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, Access.
• Exposure to Autodesk, AutoCAD, or other computer aided design software.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
