Purpose of the Role
The purpose of the role of a Driver/Operator/Fitter on our On Track Machines (OTMs) is to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient maintenance of the railway infrastructure. This is a front-line position working on our fleet of tampers across the UK.
This individual will work collaboratively within a skilled team of operators, maintainers and drivers, utilizing their expertise to successfully deliver tamping operations for infrastructure maintenance and renewal work scopes key for passenger services.
The elements of the role are made of three core competencies:
- Driver
- Operator (including maintainer)
- Fitter (engineer)
This role will require you to hold or be working to at least two of the above competencies in accordance with both industry and Colas Rail’s standards
Person Specification
Experience:
- Ideally have experience following policies and procedures safely without requiring direct supervision
- Ideally have previous experience within the Rail Industry as an engineer, operator or driver
Personal Attributes:
- Have a positive attitude and thrive in a busy and pressurized environment
- Are motivated to learn and develop and maximize personal contribution to the business.
- Ability to work both independently and as a team
Skills and Competencies:
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Can analyze problems thoroughly and make timely decisions.
- Hold PTS competency (desirable)
Key Responsibilities
Driver
- Maintain competency in all aspects of TO2-201.
- Stay up to date on all rules, regulations, and operating notices whilst ensuring assessments are completed on time.
- Take personal responsibility for route learning, refreshing, and reporting any issues.
- Obtain and acknowledge late notice information from the Control Room.
- Safely move machines unsupervised in accordance with rules and regulations.
- Adjust driving techniques for prevailing conditions.
- Perform risk-triggered commentary during driving duties.
- Observe all signals and report irregularities immediately in line with rules and procedures.
- Communicate with external parties and Control to understand and report delays.
- Report any safety incidents (including safety of the line incidents) to the appropriate parties immediately.
- Perform Driver-Only Operation (DOO) duties if qualified.
Operator
- Operate all On-Track Machines (OTMs) as instructed in accordance with Railway Standards.
- Ensure all reports (with accompanying information such as ALC files) are completed and submitted at the end of each shift (Lead Operator).
- Act as point of contact on behalf of Colas Rail for on-site customers (Lead Operator).
- Perform pre-start safety checks and safely shut down the machine in line with the appropriate procedures.
- Communicate professionally with customers.
- Assist Fitters with machine repairs.
- Communicate with the Control Room in a timely manner regarding any performance, reliability or safety issues
- Immediately report all faults to the Maintenance Team Leader and Control Room.
- Fill out and submit the Daily Work Return (DWR).
- Safely manage and report any environmental incidents and utilise equipment to minimise environmental damage.
- Perform OTM maintenance duties in line with your scope of competencies
- Ensure the machine is well maintained and kept clean.
Fitter
- Maintain competency in all aspects
- Carry out scheduled machine maintenance as instructed and ensure the maintenance department are informed on the status of each machine. Ensure service paperwork is completed and submitted to the Maintenance department in a timely manner.
- Carry out dynamic fault finding and undertake emergency repairs on-site as required to ensure the OTM fleet maintains high level of reliability and performance
- Communicate with Maintenance Team Leaders in real time regarding any faults and work with them to fix the OTM machine.
- Assist specialist fitters with machine repairs.
- Ensure machine is maintained to the required standard and kept in a clean and tidy condition
- As you will expect the organisation may change from time to time and you will be expected to meet the operational requirements.
