Job Summary

The Crusher Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of crushing equipment and related machinery in a quarry environment. This role involves overseeing the daily operations of the crusher, ensuring that materials are processed correctly, maintenance and service of equipment, and maintaining high standards of safety and quality

Essential Functions Safety

  • Participating actively in company safety programs, including safety huddles, one-on-one safety conversations, and reporting of close calls 

  • Fostering the safety culture by making good/safe decisions 

  • Participating in safety incident investigation and following through on any corrective actions 

  • Following all safety policies and procedures, including LOTOTO, Motor Vehicle Policy, Drug & Alcohol Policy, etc. 

  • Work as a team during emergency situations to ensure quick and efficient response, prioritizing safety for all personnel. 

 

Essential Functions Quality

  • Material Inspection: Regularly inspect raw materials before they enter the crusher to ensure they meet quality standards. This includes checking for contaminants or unsuitable materials. 
  • Monitoring Production Processes: Continuously monitor the crushing process to ensure that the output size and quality of the crushed material are consistent with project specifications. 
  • Quality Control Checks: Coordinate with Quality Control Team to ensure regular inspections of output material meet quality standards. 
  • Adjusting Equipment Settings: Make necessary adjustments to the crusher settings (such as crusher speed, feed rate, and size settings) to achieve the desired product quality and size distribution. 
  • Maintaining Equipment: Conduct regular maintenance on the crushing equipment to prevent breakdowns that could affect the quality of the output. This includes checking wear parts and ensuring all components function properly. 
  • Data Recording: Maintain accurate records of production data, including quantities produced and quality test results, to track performance and identify any quality issues. 
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other team members, such as quality control personnel and supervisors, to address any quality concerns and implement corrective actions when necessary. 
  • Training and Compliance: Stay updated on best practices and compliance standards related to material processing and quality management, and assist in training new operators on quality control procedures 

Functional/Technical Skills

  • Safely operate various types of crushing equipment (jaw, cone, impact). 
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for equipment usage. 
  • Participate in OJT to gain understanding existing equipment and operations.  
  • Continuously observe the crushing process for desired output size and quality. 
  • Track production rates and report discrepancies to supervisors. 
  •  Perform routine maintenance checks on crushing equipment. 
  • Replace wear parts (liners, screens, hammers) as necessary. 
  • Diagnose and resolve operational issues with crushing equipment. 
  • Identify mechanical problems and report to maintenance personnel. 
  • Fabricates special parts and up fits new equipment 
  • Adjust crusher settings (closed side settings, discharge settings) for desired specifications. 
  • Calibrate instruments and controls for optimal operation. 
  • Understand principles of crushing and material properties to optimize performance. 
  • Stay informed about advancements in crushing technology and equipment. 
  • Load raw materials into the crusher using heavy equipment (e.g., front-end loaders). 
  • Monitor feed rate and adjust as necessary for optimal performance 

Teamwork/Communication

  • Ensuring an open line of communication between departments 
  • Assists other technicians with jobs requiring more than one person. 
  • Work in a team environment; assist co-workers and supervisors with assigned duties. 
  • Communicate openly, honestly, and professionally with co-workers, supervisors, and all others. 
  • Work with alongside fellow employees to complete assigned tasks set forth by management. 
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss production goals, safety protocols, and performance issues. 
  • Coordinate with loaders and other heavy equipment operators to manage material flow effectively and prevent bottlenecks. 
  • Communicate regularly with supervisors about production metrics, equipment status, and any issues that arise during operations. 
  • Provide feedback on potential improvements in processes or equipment performance. 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently as well as part of a team. 

Education/ Minimum Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification in heavy machinery operation preferred. 
  • Previous experience operating crushers or heavy equipment in a quarry or similar environment. 
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices related to quarry operations. 
  • Certification in safety training programs (such as OSHA or Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) training) strongly recommended to ensure knowledge of safety regulations and practices. 
  • Background or experience in mechanics can be advantageous for understanding equipment operation and troubleshooting issues. 

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Extended hours during season April-October  
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, reach, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.  
  • Must be able to lift up to 75lbs. 
  • Exposed to mechanical equipment and moving mechanical parts, high places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Noise level is Loud
  • Most work is performed outdoors in a quarry or open pit setting, often exposed to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
