Job Description

The Rail Transload Operator is primarily responsible for the safe and efficient movement of rail cars, locomotives, and the loading/unloading process of the aggregate materials. This seasonal full-time position operates normally between but is not limited to the months of April and November at Standard General’s Acheson location, with the possibility of travel to other locations within the Greater Edmonton Region and Standard General’s Windfall Pit located by Whitecourt.

Key Responsibilities

  • Comply with Company and legislated health and safety standards, policies, and environmental regulations.
  • Responsible for understanding, supporting, promoting, and leading all aspects of Standard General’s safety programs and initiatives for their area of responsibility, including Goal Zero.
  • Operate Locomotives safely and efficiently.
  • Perform and document daily Locomotive Inspection checks.
  • Communicate with other train crew members and other invested parties, by radio, signals or by other means to aid in the movement and operation of trains.
  • Unload rail cars if required over offload pit, utilizing air actuated railcar doors.
  • Perform other tasks around the facilities as required during train delays and shutdowns.
  • Understand and follow all site specific General Operating Instructions outlined in Section K of Standard General’s Safety Management System and adhere to the Railway (Alberta) Act and Regulations.
  • Understand and comply with CN rules and regulations when operating CN locomotives.

Experience/Education

  • Extensive knowledge and experience working in the Rail Industry as a Locomotive Operator.
  • CROR qualification is a requirement.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent) required.
  • Knowledge of slow Speed Control and Distributed Power preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Work irregular hours, including overtime, and weekends as required.
  • Walk on uneven ground, climb rail cars, and apply handbrakes.
  • Out-of-town travel to Windfall site may be required to assist in loading of railcars.
  • Must be able to meet all pre-employment safety requirements, including Occupational Health Assessment and Drug & Alcohol testing and Safety Critical Medical.

  • Weekends as needed
