Job Title

Road Construction Grade Foreman

 

Working directly under a Construction Superintendent they help to oversee one or more projects, each with teams operating heavy machinery. A grade foreman is responsible for any earth removal in construction projects. This person needs to be able to help the Superintendent with deadlines while ensuring the safety of their team and the needs of the project.

 

Job Description

Under the direction of the Superintendent a grade foreman plans and directs the excavation and removal of earth as part of construction projects. This foreman will help maintain a budget and keep to a timeline while ensuring the overall productivity, quality and safety of a project. As a supervisor with deadlines, this individual will work over 40 hours per week. A successful excavation foreman should be able to manage various activities at once.

As with all construction managers and superintendents, a grade foreman needs to be flexible and decisive. This individual should work well under pressure and be able to face and overcome unexpected obstacles, including emergencies and bad weather. Excavation work is performed in projects that involve building highways, installing pipes and site work construction. The grading foreman is responsible for the crew's overall safety and needs to recognize and react to any perceived safety threats on site.

 

Job Duties

A grade foreman provides safeguards against dangers that are particular to excavation work.  A foreman also gives specific instructions on how to excavate, including at what angle and to what depth the crew should dig.

Other responsibilities include, ensuring the project's compliance with codes and regulations, and overseeing team training and mentoring. A grade foreman approves time cards and helps resolves disputes between workers with the help of management. A grade foreman must work ethically at all times and report any unethical violations to the Superintendent. Knowledge in the use of specific computer software for project planning purposes might be necessary.

 

Experience

3-5 years experience as a Heavy highway foreman
