Summary

Under the general supervision of the Chief Estimator, the Senior Civil Estimator is responsible for the preparation of cost estimates for conventionally bid projects, design build projects, and other alternative delivery project (ADP) models. The Senior Civil Estimator plays an integral role in The Miller Group’s vision of building greatness with its employees, promoting entrepreneurial spirit to seek constant improvement, and embracing innovation and accountability.

As a Senior Civil Estimator, You Will:

  • Develop a strategic and competitive plan for each tender
  • Guide the preparation of thorough, accurate and timely estimates, including the preparation and submission of bid documents and the development of clear written proposals and correspondence
  • Participate and understand design/build, ADP, and build to spec contracts
  • Accurate and timely interpretation of project drawings, specifications, supplier and subcontractor quotes, proposals, and other documentation
  • Prepare preliminary project schedules and draft schedules
  • Responsible for accurate take-off of quantities from project drawings and specifications
  • Prepare detailed estimates from first principals using cost history and past experience using existing estimating software systems in accordance with estimating policy, procedures and good practice
  • Solicit quotations and proposals from suppliers and subcontractors, either directly or with the assistance of a junior estimator
  • Peer review other estimators’ estimates
  • Guide, direct and train junior estimating and clerical staff
  • Assist project management group on project forecasting and costing out potential additional costs in claim situations or potential scope of work changes
  • Distribute and control of bid documents including addendums to other estimators
  • Follow-up of proposals to customers
  • Establish and maintain relationships with existing and new suppliers, and subcontractors
  • Attend site visits, pre-bid and pre-award meetings as required by the owner/engineer
  • Assist project management group in starting up a project by chairing post-award meetings and attending pre-construction meetings
  • Negotiate major purchase and subcontract agreements, prepare and review purchase orders and subcontract documents with project managers
  • Accumulate, evaluate, and document historical cost data and construction procedures and methods
  • Assist in maintenance and upgrade of the estimating database and software including analysis of field feedback on actual work performed

What You'll Bring

  • 7-10 years ongoing experience as a civil estimator in heavy civil transportation and bridge projects, augmented by additional project management experience is required
  • Completion of post-secondary education with a degree or diploma related to Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Estimating, or related education and/or experience
  • Ability to read and interpret construction related documents including plans, specifications, and other technical material
  • Ability to time manage and create plans to meet multiple deadlines within a high-pressure work environment
  • Experience with Heavy Bid estimating software, or equivalent systems is considered an asset
  • Proficiency using MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is essential, knowledge of using Bluebeam and scheduling software is also preferred
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment
  • Adaptable to flexible work schedule when required to meet deadlines
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as required
