Job Description:

The Equipment Operator is primarily responsible for safely and efficiently operating and maintaining loaders, skid steers and packers to maintain an acceptable level of workmanship and productivity at all worksites. The Equipment Operator is also responsible for promoting and participating in the Goal Zero initiative.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Experience in the roadbuilding industry is considered an asset.
  • 2 years of experience operating a construction-grade skid steer.
  • 1 year of experience operating a construction-grade loader.
  • 2 years of experience operating a construction packer.
  • Experience operating a backhoe is considered an asset.
  • Must hold a class 5 license.
  • Must be able to operate mobile heavy equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team in a busy, fast-paced environment.
  • Able to perform physical/manual labour for extended periods of time.
  • Able and willing to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to meet and adhere to all safety requirements and applicable safety policies, including pre-employment drug, alcohol, and medical testing.
  • Must be willing to join and/or maintain active membership with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 955, if not already a member.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate heavy mobile equipment of various sizes and weights safely and efficiently.
  • Understand, promote, participate in, and continuously improve all aspects of the company safety programs & initiatives (including Goal Zero).
  • Comply with Company and legislated environmental, health, and safety regulations, laws, and codes.
  • Report any problems or hazards directly to the onsite supervisor or superintendent.
  • Follow direction of supervisor or superintendent as to daily tasks and expectations.
  • Responsible for equipment checks and informing mechanics and supervisors of mechanical problems with the equipment.
  • Groundwork or Labourer tasks as required.
  • Assist in training less experienced employees on the proper operations and servicing of equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work irregular hours, including overtime, nights, and weekends as required.
  • Travel between local job sites, as required.
  • Work outdoors, which could include inclement weather; fluctuations in temperatures and humidity; and varying exposures to noise and dust.
  • Extended periods of sitting may be required.
  • Must be physically fit, with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must wear appropriate PPE as directed by company policy and OH&S regulations.
