Purpose of the role

 

Colas are responsible for the eight-year Maintenance & Response contract for National Highways Area 9. The contract covers around 2,300 miles of Strategic Road Network within Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, and Shropshire, as well as parts of Gloucestershire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire. We deliver cyclical maintenance, reactive maintenance, incident response, severe weather response and minor works in a region that has five strategically critical motorway interchange junctions, as well as being at the heart of the new HS2 network. Area 9 is a critical transport hub enabling customer journeys across the UK.

 

Colas Ltd. have an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Advisor to join the team based in Bescot, Walsall (WS1 4NL). Your role as a Health and Safety Advisor will be to provide an information and advisory service to the operational teams and management of Colas Limited on Health and Safety and Environmental issues in accordance with the dictates of Legislation, Group and Company Policy.

Main Responsibilities

 

 

As a Health and Safety Advisor you will provide guidance and coaching utilising practical experience developed from within this business and or the industry sector. Providing strong awareness of CDM requirements utilising knowledge and experience of highways maintenance. You will support the SHEQ Manager and the contract-based management in the co-ordination of all activities related to the implementation, development, and maintenance of the SHEQ management systems. This will involve project specific forward planning and site visits including the completion of inspections, audits and activities associated with project site start requirements. The role will require extensive travel across the west Midlands where both daytime and night-time operations take place. You role as a Health and Safety Advisor you will advise and coordinate on H&S and Quality issues, including forward planning of projects for SHEQ compliance. You will ensure that the requirements of the management system are being applied on site and all depots, by means of periodic inspection, audits, F2F conservations, Toolbox talks and meetings and to proactively provide instruction and task specific advice to operational teams promoting safe behaviour.  A crucial part of this role will be to support with investigating accidents/incidents and ensure lessons learnt are applied and closed out in a timely manner and to provide SHE training/awareness to the operational teams as necessary and within the scope of own expertise, To ensure that all operations carried out within our area of responsibility are undertaken with full regard for the safety of visitors, other members of staff and yourself. Ensure all activities are undertaken with due regard for the environment, to prevent pollution, comply with legal and corporate requirements and minimise environmental impact. You will undertake all other appropriate duties as assigned by your SHEQ manager or senior management.

Ideal Candidate

  

The successful candidate ideally would have a Minimum 3 years of experience and working knowledge in Safety, Health, Environment and Quality management, including audit functions, ideally within the highways industry sector. We will also consider if you worked within Health and Safety within the Manufacturing sector, with a minimum of 2-3 years experience. It is essential you are qualified to NEBOSH General/Construction level 3 or equivalent as a minimum, you will also have IOSH membership Technical as minimum or higher and a UK driving licence is essential for this role. 

 

As a Health and Safety Advisor, we are looking for someone who has excellent communication skills at all levels of operational stakeholders and SMT, you will have proven presentation, organisational capabilities, written, analytical and IT skills. The ideal candidate will be confident, strong and be able to listen to and instruct others.
